09. A little scared is good
Give kids something worth going after.
I want a goal that makes the team a little nervous and a lot excited. Something we haven’t done before, but have real reasons to believe we could.
Then I owe them more than an announcement. Putting it on a T-shirt doesn’t answer any of their questions, either.
Why is this possible for us? What will it take? What’s standing in our way? How does today’s practice help?
The kids should be able to answer those questions, too. It becomes their goal when they understand it and decide they want to go after it.
And when they accomplish something they once thought was out of reach, I hope they remember that feeling the next time life asks them to do something difficult.
